Kaufman County Juvenile Detention Center Referendum:
Cost impact on taxpayers & law enforcement.
Cost to the average homeowner will be around $2 a month.
Our property tax rate will remain 28% lower than 7 years ago.
The Juvenile Detention Center will cost approximately $40 million. If approved by voters, the cost to the average homeowner will be around $2 a month. Compared to 7 years ago, Kaufman County property tax rate will be 16¢ lower per $100 valuation.
Law enforcement departments will see overall cost savings.
Cost savings for law enforcement organizations that would no longer need to transport arrested juveniles could be worth millions of dollars over the next decade. A Juvenile Detention Center here in Kaufman County would allow our deputies, constables, and police officers to quickly book them into a local youth facility instead of driving as far as 10 to 12 hours round trip to youth facilities in other parts of Texas.
Senior citizens will see no increase in their property tax rate.
As always, homeowners 65 and older who have filed their homestead exemption will never see an increase in their property tax rates. If you have received the age 65 and older exemption on your homestead, your school taxes cannot be raised above their frozen level. If you are a senior citizen homeowner and have not filed for your exemption, you can do so by clicking HERE.
Fiscal measures will put in place to prevent cost overruns.
Should voters approve the May 3rd proposition, the Kaufman County Judge and Commissioners will maintain strict and transparent fiscal controls while constructing the Juvenile Detention Center. All efforts will be made to prevent cost overruns on the $40 million facility.
